Author Dell Sweet’s Zero Zero
This is the first book that I ever wrote. Edited by half my family, brothers and sisters.
I began this book in 1974, reading parts of it to my sister and then finally writing most of it down, about 16 pages. Over the next few years I worked at it on and off and eventually it became about 400 thousand words. I cut it in half and worked on publishing that part of the story which finally did happen on my first writer site in the mid eighties. The other half of the story is unpublished.
This book was lost for almost thirty years and caused me to rewrite the entire story line re-titled as the Earth’s Survivors. In that process I rewrote all of the characters because I could not clearly remember the old characters. Even as a writer there is a gap between what you think you wrote and what you actually wrote when you see it again after so many years. That happens to me even a few weeks after I have written a new novel. I had certain plot lines and character scenes in mind, I’m positive I wrote them yet thy are not there.
In the Earth’s Survivors series of books the characters became colored and matured with time and as I read those books and compare them to this one I can see the changes in my personal philosophy, maturity and life outlooks reflected in my characters. I assumed that would make the following books much better, but that was not the case. The first book is every bit as good, just different and I enjoy the characters as much as I did the Earth’s Survivors characters.
As I leave writing I realize I fell far short of publishing the entire story-line of the Survivors. There are still well over a dozen composition notebooks with completely written Earth’s Survivors stories, and some twenty or more with short stories and other novels that will not be published and of course the other half of this book that was not published. Even so I had a good time with what I did publish and I enjoyed being back in those worlds for the last six years that I was tied up with the stories and I managed to publish a few other novels that had nothing to do with Earth’s Survivors.
